Service description

  • TUnet refers to the comprehensive communications infrastructure at TU Wien. This campus network uses both wired and wireless technologies.
  • Before a device can be used, wired connections must be registered with Campus IT (in accordance with the TUnet usage regulations).
  • This guarantees unrestricted use of TU Wien services and intranet services and ensures support in the event of problems.
  • The allocation of network resources (e.g., IP addresses, subnets, VLANs) and changes to the network (activation and deactivation of sockets) can only be requested by TUnet authorization officers for a structural element (these persons are appointed by the management of a structural element).
  • The use of other domains (i.e., those that do not end with tuwien.ac.at, e.g., as aliases on a web server) for computers at TU Wien is gladly approved and supported by Campus IT, provided that they are required for a TU Wien-related task. The name service (primary and/or secondary) for such domains must be provided by an external provider on behalf of the owner.

  • Guaranteed unrestricted use of TU Wien services and intranet services. Support in case of problems.
  • The use of “foreign domains” (which do not end with tuwien.ac.at but refer to an IP address in TUnet) is permitted.

The service includes the following:

  • Computer registration, re-registration, and deletion (registration in the DNS service)
  • IPAM (IP address management for connected systems for IPv4 and IPv6)
  • MAC address management
  • Domain/subdomain allocation
  • VLAN allocation/management
  • Subnet management (official address space and private IANA)
  • Support for network segmentation of office and server LANs
  • Initiation of the activation and deactivation of network connection sockets
  • Description of performance features for users
  • Extended DNS management – special domain records
  • MX records for TU/institute mail service and mail bastion attributes
  • Assignment of TU firewall attributes
  • Changes to VLAN on switch port change request
  • Network compliance check, search for unregistered computers/devices in all TU networks and urgent notification of the responsible TUnet approval authorities.
  • Support/consulting for connecting complex end systems (servers with port channels, trunks)
  • Support/consulting for connecting/renewing institute firewalls, consulting/support for TUfirewall (initial contact)
  • Coordination during commissioning of institute firewalls
  • Special support for Infrastructure ITOPS (server & storage systems) in the Campus IT Datacenter and server virtualization area (mapping in TUNETDB)
  • Management of service network/OoB IP addresses, also for other departments
