Welcome to TU Wien. Today, 1 October, marks the start of a new academic year and, for new students, the beginning of a whole new chapter in their lives. For a better overview of what's on offer for first-year students, we've put together a collection of information and links below.

Helpful information and links for new students

Guide for new students, opens an external URL in a new window: The guide is intended to serve as an orientation aid for students at TU Wien.

TUW maps, opens an external URL in a new window help students to find their way around all campus locations more quickly.

The student councils, opens an external URL in a new window (Fachschaften) are the first point of contact for support in creating study plans or in case of uncertainties regarding STEOP, curriculum and registrations. 

The campus information system TISS, opens an external URL in a new window is a platform where students can find the curriculum, register for courses and exams, download necessary documents (e.g. student record sheet and confirmation of enrolement) and access the calendar.

The e-learning platform TUWEL, opens an external URL in a new window (TUWien E-Learning) is available to lecturers, university staff and students to support teaching and studying (online resources, online submissions, chats, and much more).

More information on the event

The TU Wien Bibliothek, opens an external URL in a new window is Austria's largest library for technical and scientific literature and specialist information. The specialist literature is available in printed and electronic form and can be used on site for research or borrowed. The library also offers study spaces and areas for teamwork.

Please note: the Main Library has new opening hours:

  • Monday -Friday 8 am to 7 pm
  • Saturday, Sunday closed

HTU, opens an external URL in a new window, the student union at TU Wien, comprises of many different departments, all of which deal with different topics.

Recognition of exams, opens an external URL in a new window: If students want to have credits recognised for work they completed at another educational institution prior to admission, they now have the opportunity to do so until the end of the second semester.

Advice desk Student Support
The Student Support Advice Desk is a first point of contact for students. In a confidential initial consultation, you can discuss your situation with us and we can explore together what kind of support might be appropriate for you. If needed, we can refer you to the relevant contact person, office or support service at TU Wien.

Book a consultation appointment and clarify your questions in a personal meeting on site at TU Wien or online.

Psychological counselling and mental health
Psychological consultation hour
The Psychological Consultation Hour is an internal TU service for students. It provides a one-on-one setting where students can discuss study-related or personal challenges with a clinical psychologist and work together to find solutions. Each student can book up to three counseling sessions of 50 minutes per calendar year.

Individual Counseling (External)
This is an external TU service for students. In a psychotherapeutic setting, students can discuss academic or personal challenges in one-on-one sessions with a psychotherapist and clinical psychologist.
Each student can book up to three 50-minute sessions per calendar year.

Group offers
Sometimes it is also helpful to take advantage of a group offer on a specific topic (e.g. exam anxiety, loss of motivation) together with other students who are currently in a similar situation.

Ombuds Office for Academic Affairs
The ombuds office is available to receive suggestions, requests and complaints; you can contact them easily and anonymously via an online form, opens an external URL in a new window.

GESTU
GESTU, opens an external URL in a new window (Studying for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students) provides support for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Furthermore, Student Support offers consulting on barrier-free studying.

Barrier-free Studying
Our services are aimed at TU Wien students and prospective students who encounter barriers in their studies or require individual support. This includes, among others, students with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, chronic or mental health conditions, as well as other visible or non-visible disabilities and impairments. Counselling sessions can be arranged either in person or online. Event tip

Start of studies with the Science Busters
On 9 October, the Science Busters, opens an external URL in a new window will be taking TU Wien by storm with their science cabaret. Visitors can look forward to an evening full of science and humour, because science can be colourful, educational and entertaining all at once! Molecular biologist Martin Moder and behavioural biologist Elisabeth Oberzaucher will be performing together, captivating the audience with their light-hearted and witty take on science.

Jules Verne and the Fascination of Technology
Jules Verne’s popularity stems from a unique blend of enthusiasm for progress and romantic imagination. This gives rise to a new type of character: the engineer-hero, who is characterised by sober calculation and unshakeable composure, but also by enthusiasm, decisiveness and a drive to take action.
As well as engaging talks followed by Q&A sessions and an interactive panel discussion, the event offers the opportunity to engage in personal discussions with the three experts – Karlheinz Steinmüller, Roland Innerhofer and Peter Schattschneider – at themed tables.
