1. General information

The EDV-Zentrum provides the institutes of the Vienna University of Technology with the local network TUnet, based on Ethernet (ISO 8802-3) (resolution of the Academic Senate of the Vienna University of Technology of 1985-01-21, TUnet -- concept for data communication in the area of the Vienna University of Technology).

TUnet consists of building networks for the creation of an area-wide supply of the buildings of the TU Wien with connection points and their connection.

Individual computers (servers), concentrators and institute networks are connected to the building networks.

The EDV-Zentrum provides the following services:

  •     Operation of TUnet
    •         Ensuring the functionality of the network
    •         Monitoring network operation and troubleshooting
    •         Operation of Name- (Directory-) Servers
    •         Definition and support of communication protocols
  •     Advice and information
  •     Expansion of TUnet
    •         Connection of terminal equipment and subnetworks of subscribers
    •         Extensions in terms of space, function and performance
  •     Coupling to external data networks
    •         Access to external computers
    •         file transfer
    •         external mail services
    •         Access possibility for external subscribers

2. Conditions for participation in TUnet

2.1 Cable installation

The connection of a participant (institute) to TUnet takes place at the request of the institute at the EDV-Zentrum. The EDV-Zentrum provides the participant with the following connection options:

    Transceiver interface (single or multiple)
Thinwire-connection box (in between also Twisted Pair and glass fibre)
V.24 interface (synchronous or asynchronous) (meanwhile technically obsolete)

The selection will be made together with the participant on the basis of the spatial and financial conditions and the equipment to be connected. The realization up to the connection socket in the institute area is carried out by the EDV-Zentrum in cooperation with the Bundesbaudirektion.

Participants with a larger local load volume (by cluster, diskless station, ...) are introduced to TUnet via suitable devices for load separation.

Maintenance and installation work on TUnet is carried out by the EDV-Zentrum in agreement with the Bundesbaudirektion. Interventions by participants are not permitted.

2.2 Device connection

In order to enable error-free operation of a device to be connected, the data relevant to the network must be communicated to the EDP centre before the devices are connected. Any network names, addresses and authorisations required for operation are assigned by the EDP centre.

The EDP centre determines the communication protocols supported on the network.

Maintenance and installation work on hardware and software in the participant's area of responsibility which may impair network traffic is only permitted at the times specified by the EDP Centre.

The EDV-Zentrum has the right to exclude participants from using TUnet at short notice in order to maintain network integrity in the event of violations of these conditions.

3. funding

The EDV-Zentrum realizes the building networks, the connection of the buildings, the provision of special network servers (e.g. name servers) and the installation of the network connection up to the junction box in the institute area after provision of the necessary means due to the applications made by the EDV-Zentrum.

The interface (including software) for the node to be connected as well as the connection cable from the node to the connection point must be provided by the participant.

The provisions of §90 UOG regarding reimbursement of costs shall apply mutatis mutandis.

In order for the EDP Centre to be able to apply to the BMWF for the necessary funds, the EDP Centre must be notified of the expected connection requirements for the following year by August of the current year at the latest (by April if major structural measures are required).
