Now you see me

Why women are still under-represented in mathematics

Today, May 12th, is International Women in Mathematics Day, celebrated around the world. The aim of this day is, on the one hand, to recognise the achievements of female mathematicians and, on the other hand, to inspire more women to take an interest in the subject. Why May 12th of all days? It is the birthday of the Iranian mathematician and first female Fields Medal winner, Maryam Mirzakhani. Since 2019, this day in May has been used as an opportunity to campaign for greater equality of opportunity in science.

This year’s International Day of Women in Mathematics is being used at TU Wien to raise awareness of women in mathematics here in Austria and to increase the visibility of female mathematicians. With the “Now you can see me, opens an external URL in a new window” campaign, the fem*MA Network of Women* in Mathematics, opens an external URL in a new window is putting the spotlight on six female mathematicians – Ulrike Schneider, Ekaterina Fokina, Sandra Müller, Leila Taghizadeh, Elisa Davoli and Julia Eisenberg – and presenting them, their careers and their research in more detail through interviews.

As part of the campaign, six canvases have been created in collaboration with postdoctoral researcher Lorenza D'Elia. These are on display from today at the Freihaus on the fifth floor in the green area outside office DA05F22 (TUW Maps, opens an external URL in a new window) as well as temporarily as posters in the Old GZ and in Lecture Hall 8 (Nöbauer Lecture Hall).

Feeling spontaneous?

What career paths are open to women after completing a degree in mathematics? In a new edition of “Paths in Maths”, four successful female mathematicians talk about their career paths in academia and industry. Among other things, they discuss how they found their first job, what a typical working day looks like for them and what key experiences they have gained along the way.
