Service outage TUnet fixed

Affected Service: TUnet

Indirectly affected services: ALL

Affected service users: staff, students, external persons

Date of the fault occurrence:
03.10.2024

Time of the fault occurrence:
12:04-12:29

During the planned migration of the library services behind our TU.it firewall (Firewall-as-a-Service), a configuration error caused TUnet to fail yesterday. In addition to the actual migration, a new technology (BGP-VXLAN-EVPN) was to be used between the buildings for the affected “cross-building VLAN”. This mistakenly created a loop that triggered a flood of packets.
As the work was taking place in the backbone core, there was a total failure of the TUnet, which of course affected all services. The door locking system was only fully functional again in the course of the afternoon with the help of GuT.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused.

In future, we will proactively switch all outstanding trunk cross-connections between buildings to EVPN in order to eliminate this “stumbling block”. To this end, we will agree on maintenance windows with the IT admins of the affected network segments.
