With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the Globalink Research Internship (GRI) programme, student mobility is being promoted and international networking of excellent research further strengthened. The agreement enables outstanding students from technical universities in Austria to undertake research internships at Canadian universities and receive a scholarship for this purpose. Up to 13 research placements are planned per year, during which students will work on international research projects for around twelve weeks and establish academic contacts. The programme combines academic excellence with international experience and gives young talents access to global research networks as well as supplementary training in areas such as teamwork, project management and entrepreneurship.
International cooperation as the key to innovation
For TU Austria, the agreement represents a further step towards deepening strategic partnerships with international research centres. “International cooperation is a key driver of scientific excellence and innovation. The Globalink programme offers our students the opportunity to experience research in a world-class international environment and to expand their expertise globally. At the same time, we are strengthening scientific ties between Austria and Canada,” says Jens Schneider, President of TU Austria and Rector of TU Wien.
Investing in talent and a shared future
Canada also sees the partnership as a significant boost for international collaboration in research and innovation. “Canada is proud to support international research collaboration and to expand our partnership with Austrian academic institutions. Programmes such as Globalink, will deepen the scientific exchange between Austria and Canada’s leading research universities and gives young Austrian talent the opportunity to build long-term scientific partnerships with Canada. This represents our shared commitment to scientific excellence and also lays foundations for mutual economic prosperity,” says Canadian Ambassador Alison Grant.
Supporting young talent and global knowledge exchange
The cooperation is creating new links between Austria’s technical universities and leading research institutions in Canada. In addition to student mobility, the focus is particularly on the global exchange of knowledge and expertise, as well as potential research collaborations within the framework of Horizon Europe. The Globalink Research Internship is an international programme run by the Canadian innovation organisation Mitacs, bringing students together with research projects at universities worldwide.
