How encryption works
If an e-mail is to be encrypted by the gateway - either because the sender has selected the "Always Encrypt" option, or the subject starts with "#encrypt" or "#enc" - the "best" encryption option for the recipient is selected:
1. Encryption via S/MIME if a valid S/MIME certificate of the recipient is available.
2. Encryption via PGP if a valid PGP key is available for the recipient.
3. Delivery of the email to a secure mailbox (WebMail)
Variant 1. and 2. are established email encryption standards. If neither variant is possible for the application, the email is delivered to a secure web mailbox, from where the recipient can view it via a browser. If the recipient does not yet have a corresponding mailbox, an email is sent with the request to register, otherwise the user receives a notification that a new email is in his mailbox.
